An iPhone case that communicates with space... Apple’s new project
Apple has filed a patent application for an improved iPhone satellite connection. The Cupertino-based company has designed a removable cover that not only protects the device but also incorporates an array of antennas to connect the phone directly to satellites. This addition would not only be helpful in emergencies but would also allow users to access the internet from virtually anywhere.
The patent, titled "Electronic Device and Cover with Satellite Communication Capabilities," describes a system consisting of a mobile phone (iPhone) mounted inside a removable cover. This cover is not passive; it contains phased-array antennas that communicate with satellites in orbit.
According to the document, the system works via a rotating cover that houses the components. When the user opens the cover, the antennas automatically point towards the sky to improve signal reception and transmission. The iPhone and the cover communicate via various technologies, such as NFC, radio frequencies, or wired connections.
The accessory includes signal routing technology that allows the iPhone to direct its signal toward the satellite for improved connectivity. The antennas and all electronic circuitry are housed within the casing, eliminating the need for engineers to modify the iPhone's internal components. It also includes an additional battery to extend the phone's battery life and performance.
The system proposed by Apple attempts to overcome two of the biggest challenges of satellite communications: interference and alignment. By placing the antennas inside a movable cover, the signal won't be blocked by common obstacles like hands or heads. The cover uses information processed by the iPhone to adjust its internal components in real time.
To address issues like satellite misalignment or user movement, the cover utilizes signal routing technology, a feature introduced with Wi-Fi 5 to improve wireless coverage and speed. In this system, the iPhone uses specialized NFC coils to exchange data and signals with the cover to realign the antennas.
A Bloomberg report , published in November 2025, indicates that Apple is seeking to change the way we interact with satellite communications. The company wants users to stop pointing their phones at the sky, so the idea of a case with antennas that automatically adjust to find the best connection seems perfectly logical.
