Instead of leaving your computer in sleep mode, turn it off on a daily basis. Determine which is better for saving time.
We've all done it at some point in our lives to save time: instead of turning off our computers, we set them to sleep. And it's not necessarily a bad thing if our computer remains in sleep mode rather than shutting down. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, and in this article, we'll look at what happens to our computer if we choose one over another.
For desktop and laptop computers, we will break down in detail what each option means if we want to put the computer into sleep mode or turn it off completely so that we can divide all the information we have in the most efficient way.
What does it mean to shut down our computer or put it into sleep mode?
Shutting down our computer is the option that closes all functions and applications that were running up to that moment, and using it has several advantages:
- Reduced energy consumption: Since a device that is switched off consumes no energy, this ultimately saves us money. Furthermore, this becomes even more important if our device is a desktop computer, as its electricity consumption is higher than that of mobile devices.
- Prevents potential errors and malfunctions: Shutting down your computer also deletes temporary files and your cache. This significantly reduces the chance of errors accumulating in your operating system due to some processes not closing properly.
- Benefits for extending the life of devices: Regularly turning off the computer can prevent essential hardware components from overheating, which would otherwise be subject to greater wear and tear and could cause certain components to fail.
We can say that the only downside to shutting down our computer is the time it takes to restart it and open the applications we need again. If you're impatient, this can be a minor inconvenience.
As for putting it into sleep mode, this puts your computer into a low-power state and shuts down most but not all components. This may allow you to resume your session more quickly, and its advantages include:
- Saving time: You can resume work or a task you left in the middle of much more quickly than shutting down your computer, as you do not need to open applications again.
- Reduce electricity consumption: If you have to keep your computer running all day, for example, if you need to perform an important download, you can keep it running with the computer in sleep mode (although you should make sure to do this in your system settings).
The main drawback of sleep mode lies in one of the strengths we mentioned earlier regarding shutdown mode: it doesn't close processes or services, and the accumulation of any of these over time can lead to errors. In the case of laptops, as long as they are not connected to a power source, their batteries will also gradually drain, so they may stop working within a few hours.
Summary
The decision is yours between one practice or another, and ultimately everything depends on your usage habits, but from here we can recommend that once you have finished your daily tasks, at least turn off your computer at night to extend its lifespan and avoid errors, although you can use sleep mode during the day to save time.
