Experts are honest about what it means to accept or reject all cookies.

Every time we go to a website, we see the same thing: "Accept all cookies" or "Reject them." Many close the site without hesitation, but the truth is that this option is more than just a visual annoyance. According to experts, accepting or rejecting cookies determines how much personal information you share online and how companies can track your browsing habits.

Cookies are small files that websites store on your device. Some are essential, allowing you to maintain a shopping cart on sites like Amazon or remembering your preferred language for a particular page. Others collect data about your online behavior to display personalized ads or gather usage statistics. These latter files, called "non-essential," are the ones that raise the most concerns due to their tracking capabilities.

By clicking "Accept all," you grant the website and third parties permission to install all types of cookies, including advertising cookies. This improves personalization (you'll see ads and recommendations tailored to your interests) and allows platforms like Google or Meta to track your activity across multiple websites and devices. By selecting "Deny all," only the necessary cookies are stored, limiting tracking but potentially affecting some important features.

Many people now accept cookies without thinking, and this can be harmful.

Since 2018, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has required websites to request your explicit consent before storing unnecessary cookies. Furthermore, these websites must allow you to continue browsing without accepting all cookies, giving you the option to change your mind later. This is why pop-up ads have become so common: they are not legally required. These days, it's very common to accept everything without reading anything, so experts recommend alternatives like the Global Privacy Control System (GPC). This system allows your browser to automatically determine your privacy preferences without requiring you to manually configure all notifications. However, it is not yet available on all platforms.

If you accidentally accepted cookies, you can delete them from your browser settings and start over. However, this will delete any saved sessions, and you will have to log in again.
