Electric bikes are coming to an end. This hydrogen bike is available for purchase and can be charged with just a glass of water
Forget electric bikes; they are already out of fashion. The latest thing is hydrogen bikes, which run on water. They are also the most environmentally friendly and have the same features as rechargeable devices.
The French brand HubUR has managed to apply hydrogen car technology to bicycles, creating a system that allows you to create hydrogen at home in a completely safe way. So you don't need to buy hydrogen cartridges or refuel at a gas station.
It's a revolutionary idea because the only thing HubUR's Boon H2 hydrogen bikes need to power their electric motor for 50 kilometers is a glass of water. How does it work?
As you can see in the opening news video, the Boon H2 bikes have a compartment in the tube where the hydrogen cartridge is stored.
This cartridge contains hydrogen at a low pressure, just 10 bar. This is about twice the pressure in a bottle of champagne and about 20 to 70 times less than a scuba tank, so it is completely safe.
The bike has a mechanism above the pedals that converts hydrogen into electricity, powering a conventional bike's electric motor for 50 kilometers.
The key to everything is to recharge that cartridge. The bike has a hydrogen generator (electrolyzer) installed, which converts water into hydrogen. Just add a glass of water, and after 4 or 5 hours the hydrogen cartridge will be recharged.
These cartridges are cheap, so you can refill 4 or 5 of them and carry them as spares to get more distance. It takes 5 seconds to change a cartridge.
It is worth noting that the electrolyzer needs to be connected to electricity to convert water into hydrogen, so it consumes electricity, although it also accepts solar panels. So where is the advantage? The main advantage is that it consumes less electricity, and most importantly, it does not need a lithium battery.
HubUR has four models of hydrogen bikes on sale: sporty, urban, designer, and folding, with prices starting at 4,598 euros, including the hydrogen generator. It's not cheap, but we're talking about a unique and revolutionary technology. You can find more information on their website.
