Introducing the latest HDMI killer that China has developed

The idea of replacing the numerous cables we frequently use with a single cable, which started out as a local project in Shenzhen, swiftly became a declaration of intent for the Chinese tech sector. Despite sounding like a technical term, this new standard, called GPMI, may mark the end of the connections that we all use on a daily basis, including HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt.

Reducing the number of cables between devices is GPMI's obvious objective. And it accomplishes all of that. Chinese media reports claim that this standard can simultaneously transmit power, data, and video. Even more amazing is the fact that it performs better than any other cable currently available on the market.

The GPMI Type-C version can support up to 240 watts of power and achieve a bandwidth of 96 Gbps. 192 Gbps and up to 480 watts are doubled in the Type-B version (which has its own connector). To put this into perspective, Thunderbolt 4 stays at 40 Gbps and 100 watts, while HDMI 2.1 can only transmit data at a maximum speed of 48 Gbps and cannot even transmit power.

The Chinese cable that has the power to permanently alter everything

And who is responsible for this new cable miracle? Tencent, TCL, HiSilicon, Huawei, and even state-owned research facilities are among the 50 Chinese tech behemoths that have teamed up. Last October, they all presented the initial prototypes at an 8K video conference in Shenzhen, along with a draft standard.

GPMI was created especially for gadgets that need to use a lot of power and resources, like gaming laptops, 8K screens, and extended reality headsets. This technology's ambitious goal is to have a single cable for everything. Consider using a single cable to charge your laptop, connect it to an external display, and transfer data all at once. Despite its futuristic sound, this technology is currently under development and has the potential to completely alter how we connect our gadgets.
