Is it problematic to charge other devices using the router's USB port?
USB ports are found on many routers. They have this option in addition to the most popular Ethernet ports. In essence, they are identical to those found on a computer, TV, etc. You will be able to connect a variety of devices, including a hard drive. For instance, it can be used to update your device, but it can also be used to charge devices. Does that sound intriguing to you now?
By connecting it to a USB port on another device, like a TV or, in this case, a router, you can charge your phone via USB just like you can by connecting it to your computer. As you can see, there are some benefits to this, but you should also be aware of some disadvantages.

To put it briefly, you can charge any device by connecting it to the router's USB port. In the end, the port contains a power source, albeit one that is not intended for that use. Instead, it's used to connect storage drives and other devices.
This can be useful if you need to charge something and don't have a power outlet nearby or it's busy. You can use your router's outlet, plug in whatever you want, and that's it. Your router may have more than one USB port, so you can easily charge multiple devices at the same time.
In an emergency, such as a damaged charger, simply plug the USB cable into the appropriate port on your router and charge your phone or other device. Of course, it's important that it's a classic USB Type-A connector, not USB Type-C, as routers typically have the former available.

But is it always a good idea to charge devices using your router's USB port? The truth is, no. The first thing you should know is that the download will be very slow. That's fine if you're charging a small device, plugging in a specific item, or don't mind if it takes a long time. You should also consider any potential interference that may occur. We've discussed elsewhere the problems that can arise if we place devices too close to the router. This applies to devices that use Bluetooth technology, cordless phones, and so on. If you intend to charge or connect these devices to your router, which uses the 2.4 GHz frequency, this could affect your internet connection.
Then there's the issue of overheating. It's not uncommon, especially in the summer, for a router to overheat, causing problems. If you connect devices to the router via USB, this can also increase the likelihood of overheating.
In short, you can plug your devices into the device's USB port and charge them. On paper, nothing should happen. However, as we explained, there are some limitations, and you may also encounter issues with interference and overheating in some cases.
