A medical professional cautions that using a phone in the restroom raises your risk of hemorrhoids

It is untrue for anyone to say they have never used their phone in the restroom or while sitting on the toilet. In our society, where we must always divert our attention, it is a common practice. New research, however, indicates that using a cell phone while conducting business raises the risk of hemorrhoids in addition to other health issues.

Varicose veins or enlargements in the rectum or anus veins are known as hemorrhoids. They can be extremely painful and occasionally result in bleeding.

What connection exists between hemorrhoids and using a cell phone while seated on the toilet?

According to a study presented a few days ago at the American Gastroenterological Association's annual Digestive Disease Week 2025, which was covered by the Voice of Health website, using a cell phone while sitting on the toilet raises the risk of hemorrhoids by 46%.

125 participants had colonoscopies as part of the study, and they were questioned about their bowel habits and hemorrhoid-related information, including fiber consumption, sedentary lifestyle, and constipation.

66% of participants use their smartphones while sitting on the toilet, and 43% of participants have hemorrhoids, according to medical exams and colonoscopies.

The study came to the conclusion that using a phone in the restroom increases the risk of hemorrhoids by 46% after accounting for variables like weight, age, eating habits, and the amount of time spent sitting on the toilet.

It's true that with this data, it's hard to determine what proportion of the problem is attributable to cell phones and what other behaviors, like eating too little fiber or leading a sedentary lifestyle, raise the risk of hemorrhoids.

People who use their smartphones while working spend more time sitting down than those who don't, according to the study. These minutes add up over the years because we use the restroom multiple times a day. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that prolonged sitting increases the risk of hemorrhoids.

Therefore, remember to leave your phone in a different room the next time you use the restroom. Your digestive system will appreciate it.
