Microsoft declares war on old drivers in Windows 11, and this is how it affects you
Microsoft announced a strategic initiative to phase out definitions to improve security and compatibility for Windows.
According to Microsoft itself, this first phase of the cleanup will focus on outdated drivers, for which newer versions are available via Windows Update.
They explain that developers will still be able to re-release drivers that are classified as outdated, but this may require providing a valid justification.
Upon completion of this first phase, Microsoft will give partners six months to raise any questions.
If no objections are received during this period, the affected drivers will be removed from Windows Update.
They explain that this strategy is not a one-time thing but will become an ongoing practice.
This first phase is limited to modern alternative definitions, but future phases may expand the scope to include other types of definitions.
The company says, "We believe this approach will help improve the security posture of Windows and ensure that users receive an improved set of definitions."
This enhances the security of the operating system and also ensures a more stable and efficient user experience.
