Unfortunately, Google Chrome will no longer function on these phones
Android phones hardly received updates for longer than two cycles a few years ago. We are now providing updates every four to seven years, which is a significant improvement. However, the apps we use on a daily basis are not included in that. Updating Android is pointless if, for instance, Chrome or WhatsApp stop functioning.
Google declared yesterday that Android 8 (Oreo) and Android 9 will not be able to use the upcoming version of Chrome.
Although you can always use a different browser, Google Chrome is widely used for a variety of purposes, including syncing websites and services between computers and mobile devices.
The final version of Chrome that supports Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie) is Chrome 138. Chrome 139 (tentatively scheduled for August 5, 2025) is the first version of Chrome to require Android 10.0 or later," Google announced on the Chrome support site.
Therefore, the update will end on August 5 if your phone is running Android 8 or 9.
Go to Settings (gear icon) and select About phone to see which Android version is installed on your phone.
August 21, 2017 saw the release of Android 8 Oreo, but many phones didn't get it until 2018. August 6, 2018 saw the commercial release of Android 9 Pie, but most smartphones didn't get it until 2019.
