Turn off this feature on your computer to extend the life of your hard drive

There are different types of hard disks, the most important of which are HDD and SSD, and each hard disk has a lifespan that is greatly affected by the rate of writing to it. The more it is used and the more data is transferred, the shorter the lifespan of the hard disk. SSD hard disks also have a lifespan estimated in terabytes, so it is necessary to reduce the writing rate on the hard disk and disable features that increase this, such as the TRIM feature, which we will learn about in this post.

TRIM was introduced in Windows 7, 8, and 10. Its purpose is to permanently delete files from the hard drive and erase traces of files, which are write operations that affect the life of the hard drive. Deleted files cannot be recovered afterward, which helps increase the speed of data writing and reading on the hard drive and extends its life.

Enable TRIM.

Open the command prompt as administrator by typing CMD in the Start menu search and right-clicking and selecting Run As Administrator as shown in the picture.

Then type this command to know the activation status of the fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify. Then press Enter. If the phrase DisableDeleteNotify appears with 0 in front of it, this means that the Trim feature is enabled. If the number 1 appears in front of it, the feature is not enabled.

To enable the Trim feature, type the command fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0.

To disable the Trim feature, type the command fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 1 so that you can recover files if they were deleted by mistake, as shown in the image above.

By activating this feature, traces of deleted files will be erased, which reduces writing operations and extends the life of the hard drive.
