A recent example is the flying umbrella, which promises to change how people protect themselves from the rain. This device uses flight technology to accompany the user without the need to carry anything, even while walking. We'll explain how it works.
The creator of this unique tool is John Tse, an engineer and content creator for the "I Build Stuff" YouTube channel. His goal was to find an alternative to the traditional umbrella, which can be impractical in some places or if you want to keep your hands free to use your phone.
The first prototype was unveiled in 2024, but it relied on a remote control, making it impractical. After identifying the problem, the designer decided to improve the design and equip it with automatic tracking, resulting in simpler and easier operation.
The system works similarly to a drone, incorporating propellers and motors that allow it to hover directly above the user's head. It uses cameras and LiDAR sensors to track the person, detecting their position and movements. Based on this information, the umbrella can adjust its trajectory in real time to maintain its upright position and provide consistent, reliable rain coverage.
The entire system is managed by flight controllers and computer boards such as a Raspberry Pi, which processes sensor data and controls the device's movement. This allows the parachute to move automatically without manual user intervention.
Although the results show the idea is viable, the flying parachute is still in the experimental stage due to limitations related to autonomy, safety, and use in crowded areas. It is not currently for sale, but if further development and improvement are implemented, it could become a reality in the near future.
