A cybersecurity expert says that hackers can easily get into these home appliances.
We live in a world where everything is connected, from voice assistants to security cameras to home appliances that we can control with our phones. Everything seems easier. But if you don't take basic steps to protect them, these devices can become gateways for cybercriminals.
Maria Aberador, a cybersecurity expert, said in a TikTok video that some of the most common devices we use every day are also the easiest to hack. Let's find out.
● Cleaning robots
In this case, cleaning robots map their surroundings and connect to the internet to be controlled from a mobile device. If the network is unsecured, it becomes a vulnerability. An attacker can access your home's map, see when you're away, and even, if equipped with a microphone, use it to spy on you. This risk increases if security updates are not up to date.
● Smart locks
Thanks to them, we can open and close doors using apps or voice assistants, but some may suffer from security vulnerabilities. For example, many smart locks connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, making them susceptible to hacking if not configured correctly or if weak passwords are used.
A cybercriminal can intercept this signal and use various techniques to guess passwords or even use malware to attack them.
● Smart TVs
These devices connect to the internet, and many contain microphones and cameras that may be vulnerable to hacking. Attackers can exploit security flaws in the television's operating system or in any of the applications installed on it.
This gives them access to the camera, browsing history, or even control of the television. They can also use phishing techniques through fake applications.
● Baby monitors
But baby monitors carry more risks than they appear. Some may not come with adequate default protection, and users often don't change the default passwords.
Cybercriminals can remotely access a webcam via the internet and see what's happening in real time, or even speak through the speaker. In other words, if a device has remote access capabilities and is unprotected, it becomes an easy target.
