What is the new letter Z that shows up on Google Maps, and why is it important to know going forward?

Google Maps has a new icon, and it's a big one if you live in a city with low-emission zones. In these areas, as you probably already know, rules apply that restrict the movement of the most polluting vehicles. Once you enter the destination, you will see the small icon on the left side of the screen. It also contains information that you can click on to access more details: the text “ZBEDEP” indicates that it is a “Low Emission Area with Special Protection.”.
When clicked, Google Maps displays the entire area subject to the regulations on a map and also provides a link to the websites of official bodies where more information can be found.
For now, the letter "Z" is only present in the maps in the mobile version of Google Maps. It is not available on the web, and it is not known if it will arrive, but it is clearly more useful on a smartphone.
