What effects might a single day of internet outage have on the world economy? A study by online security firm Atlas VPN identified the top ten impacted nations and the magnitude of the effect on the world's population as a whole. Although they are not in the top ten, Arab nations would suffer greatly.
According to the study, $43 trillion will be lost in total. NetBlock, a tool that determines the economic impact of an internet outage based on indicators from the US Census, the International Telecommunication Union, and the World Bank, is used to calculate the cost of an internet shutdown.
The ten most impacted nations—those that will sustain the biggest losses overall—are the specific focus of the study. With losses of just over $11 trillion, the United States is unsurprisingly at the top of the list of nations most impacted by the situation.
China comes in second with roughly 10 trillion. However, since details regarding its connection are less clear, the Asian nation's loss might not be totally accurate. The second-most populous nation in the world will also be significantly impacted, more or less. It will be home to about 21 million people, or slightly less than half of the world's population, along with the United States.
