We have some excellent news today if you are worried about the battery life of modern smartphones. One of the top businesses in the world has declared that it is trying to extend the battery life of its products. And not by adding more mAh than normal or using software. The protagonists of this tale are Samsung and its screens; it will not happen again, but it does force a new method of producing far more effective screens.
Samsung is creating its own PHOLED screens, which is news. This is a new technology that is being developed. Its objective is to use phosphor subpixels to increase the efficiency of displays. There are two at the moment: phosphor and fluorescent.
For red and green, but not blue, current OLED screens use phosphor subpixels. In their phosphor-based form, the latter are far more costly to produce, and the best technology for doing so has not yet been discovered. Displays will use all of this technology with these blue phosphor subpixels, which will lower their power usage.
In what way? Phosphorescent pixels can use all of the light that is emitted, whereas fluorescent subpixels can only use 25%. Although they require 75% less energy to produce, they are more costly. An OLED panel's red and green subpixels are already phosphorescent, so we know this.
Nevertheless, there is a major disadvantage to using PHOLED panels, which have all of the subpixels in a phosphorescent form, and that is that they are much less robust than modern OLED displays. Not slightly less, but a production lifespan that is 45% shorter. In other words, a PHOLED display would last 5.5 years, whereas an OLED display would typically last around 10 years.
The good news is that smartphones usually have a "short" renewal cycle when compared to other display-equipped devices, so if power consumption is drastically decreased and battery life is increased daily, the durability of these new displays may be within budget.
A phone with PHOLED technology will not be available for purchase anytime soon.
Development times are the bad news, as they always are in these situations. According to the report, Samsung is thinking about releasing this kind of display in the middle of 2025.
Although there is still time, this technology appears to be among the most promising advancements in smartphone autonomy.
