Because of Windows 11 and OneDrive, he lost thirty years' worth of pictures. His account was banned by Microsoft.

Microsoft updated account sign-in earlier this year to make it more secure and up to date.

Everything is safely stored because it is linked to your BitLocker encryption key. Some users have previously complained about losing their data because they misplaced their BitLocker key. Windows 11 has this encryption turned on by default, which could be dangerous.

One Reddit user disclosed that this kind of lock could cause data loss of up to 30 years.

The victim wrote, "After I transferred thirty years' worth of priceless images and work to OneDrive, Microsoft arbitrarily locked my account."

Before a big move, I was combining data from a number of old drives that I had to get rid of because of hardware and space issues.

"My account was suspended by Microsoft without any prior notice or explanation. Each of the eighteen times I filled out the compliance form, I got an automated response that produced no results. No interaction with people. Not very helpful. The victim complained of "deafening silence and generic emails."

Microsoft states that an account may be banned due to activity that violates its terms of use, and that it doesn't seem to be very easy to get it back.

You immediately lose access to the Services and data when you terminate your account, according to the same Terms of Use: "Your right to use your Microsoft account to access the Services ends immediately." Unless we are mandated by law to keep, return, or transfer any related data or content, we will delete it.

Naturally, this loss of access results in total data loss because Windows 11 requires a Microsoft account to install and automatically activates BitLocker encryption on many computers.

As a result, users must continue backing up locally using external hard drives or other storage options and avoid becoming overly dependent on OneDrive and other cloud services.
