Google Translate will become your next English teacher, thanks to new artificial intelligence features. The tech company has released an update to its mobile app that includes a learning mode, which will help us learn another language through personal conversations.
According to a post on the Google blog, the Translate app has added a new learning experience for practicing English. This mode includes training sessions, as well as listening and speaking activities tailored to each user's level. All you have to do is choose from three levels (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced), and the AI will customize your plan.
The Translator learning mode includes activities similar to those found in apps like Duolingo. For example, users can listen to an audio clip and select words they recognize from the sentence. They can also start a conversation through interactive training sessions, which are automatically generated and adapt to their skill level.
The latter is important, as mastering conversation is one of the most complex aspects of learning a new language. Users can set a goal, and AI will generate scenarios to help them achieve it. Google notes that these activities were developed with the help of experts and based on the latest research in the field of language learning.
AI-generated learning sessions are available via the "Practice" button at the bottom of the screen. If you've previously downloaded the latest version of the Google Translate app for iOS and Android and tapped this button, the app will ask you to set your goals and skill level. After setting up, tap "Start Practice" to access all activities.
Google stated, "These updates were made possible by advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. As we continue to expand the horizons of language processing and understanding, we can support a wider range of languages and improve the quality and speed of translations."
Google Learning Mode is currently available for Spanish, French, or Portuguese speakers who want to learn English. Similarly, if you speak English and want to learn Spanish or French, you can do so through the app.
