ChatGPT has not been weakened by DeepSeek's rise; in just one month, it added 100 million users

DeepSeek fails to beat ChatGPT. Although the latest AI model to hit the market, created by a Chinese team, is free and open source and has a huge appeal for users, it has failed to make enough of a dent in OpenAI’s leading model.

According to Reuters, the AI model launched in 2022 has just reached 400 million current users. This represents a 150% year-over-year growth for ChatGPT, far ahead of its direct competitors (Gemini and Meta AI).

ChatGPT's success in quadrupling its number of active users in two years is due to several factors, starting with achieving a greater success rate in responses and a processing speed that is three times faster than its previous model, GPT-4.

Furthermore, ChatGPT has made a good splash in the business world, presumably thanks to its alliance with Microsoft; although there is no exclusive partnership between them anymore, they will remain partners until 2030.

Speaking of the partnership with Microsoft, there are rumors that point to a ChatGPT-powered search bar in future versions of Windows, as we can read on PCOutlet. Copilot is powered by OpenAI despite being a standalone service, but the future of Windows may include seamless integration with ChatGPT. However, rumors suggest that only paying subscribers will benefit from this integration.

Despite the obstacles, ChatGPT seems set to remain in the lead for a long time. Given the year-over-year growth rate they’re on, it’s clear that OpenAI won’t be leaving the AI throne vacant for a while, despite the things they have to polish. For example, Claude is more capable when it comes to writing academic papers, and Perplexity outperforms ChatGPT in research tasks, but that doesn’t seem to worry OpenAI at the moment.
