Microsoft issues a warning to Google Chrome users: Stop using the Google browser due to this serious threat before it's too late.
The year 2025 started off strong for Google's browser. Recently, malware has been cloaking itself so users can't see it while accessing websites. This time, it's attacking the browser again, leaving alternatives like Mozilla Firefox and Opera in a better position.
Tech giant Microsoft has warned anyone using Windows 10 or Windows 11 that Chrome is not a good place to be, as it has discovered a new advanced cyberattack that can bypass security layers to obtain sensitive information.
All your bank account and social media data could be at risk if you don't take the necessary measures, as this virus appears to have been installing itself as a destructive and stealthy Trojan on various browsers for several months.
Fortunately, Microsoft has conducted a comprehensive analysis to share all the details and understand how the virus works so you don't fall victim to this dangerous malware.
Microsoft's latest report focuses on alerts about a remote access Trojan (RAT), known as StilachiRAT, which has been wreaking havoc on multiple browsers since November 2024.
This malware is classified as stealthy malware that is capable of successfully penetrating systems, infiltrating them, and remaining there for a period of time, extracting all kinds of confidential data, including that related to bank accounts, online stores, and personal information.
According to the report, this type of virus is capable of fully reconnoitering the operating system, from monitoring hardware to camera sections and programs accessible to the administrator.
Other vulnerabilities are believed to target digital wallets, such as Binance, Revolut, PayPal, and others, which can be compromised through Google Chrome by stealing credentials decrypted by the malware.
That's not all. This virus is considered one of the biggest threats this year, as it can activate command and control (C2) communication to remotely control parts of a system, either using code or persistence mechanisms such as supply chain management (SCM).
How to protect yourself from StilachiRAT?
Is there any way to stop or prevent a StilachiRAT attack? Experts say one of the best ways to avoid it is to abandon Chrome and switch to Edge, which features SmartScreen, which "identifies and blocks malicious sites, including phishing sites, fraudulent sites, and sites that host malware."
Windows developers and Google employees are working to eliminate this major problem.
